SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS

“…to take responsibility for the urban development and population growth projected during the planning period and their potential impact on the environment”

Sustainability Design and Policy reduces:

  • Its contribution to climate change

  • Its reliance on foreign oil & other fossil fuel sources

  • Its consumption of natural resources

  1. Ecology

  2. Economy

  3. Equity

  • In order to acheive Sustainable Development, Emeryville has created a framework dealing with the overlap of the "3 E's"

Framework: "3 E's" of Sustainability

Brownfield Remediation:

  • City has cleaned up 240 acres of land with substantial soil and groundwater contamination

-Allowed for new and safe development

  • Protection of public health, deep groundwater resources, and the ecological resources of the San Francisco Bay.

Stormwater Management:

  • Has taken responsibility in working to reduce the amount of impervious surfaces and clean stormwater runoff before entering the San Francisco Bay.

  • Vegetation to treat pollutants in stormwater runoff

Ex) rain gardens, bioretention areas, living roof systems, bioinfiltration swales, cisterns integrated into the architecture

Local transit through the Emery Go-Round shuttle:

  • Free bus shuttle service connecting key job and activity centers

  • No BART station within the city of Emeryville

  • Connection to BART and AC Transit transportation hubs

  • Emeryville has joined 10 other cities in Alameda County to partner with the County and Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI) on developing its own Climate Action Plan

  • CAP plan focuses on:

  1. Transportation/land use

  2. Wastes

  3. Energy

  • General Plan calls for the implementation of the CAP

The jurisdictions committed to an

“ongoing, coordinated effort to reduce the emissions that cause global warming, improve air quality, reduce waste, cut energy use and save money"

Urban Environmental Accords:

  • Emeryville has signed on to the Urban Environmental Accords on United Nations World Environment Day in 2005
